Badwater Basin is the lowest point in North America and once you step out the ground is covered with salt. Take a look at the mountain above the road to see the sign showing you where the sea level is – 282 feet above your head. At the time we were there the salt flats are not as white as expected due to rain water that just poured in days before we arrived. So the water, salt and the sand mixed together gives this grayish color during this time of year, summer months is the best months for the white salt polygons.
Add color to your day, drive to the Artist’s Palette and see the beautiful colors of the mountainside. Don’t forget to buy your souvenirs at the Furnace Creek Ranch Gift Shop and have your National Park Passport stamped at the Visitors Center nearby.
A gas station is just right by the Visitors Center, can grab food at Stovepipe area and Furnace Creek Ranch Store. Accommodations available at Furnace Creek Inn, Furnace Creek Rance and Stovepipe Inn. For cheaper accommodation drive 30miles to Beatty, Nevada and enjoy a cooler weather and a casino up there.
We ended our day at Beatty, Nevada, and friends tried their luck at the casino nearby…. yeepeehhh!!! they won!!!!
